Children’s Moment – April 26, 2020

For our children’s moment today, I want to talk a little bit about the earth. This past week, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. As United Methodists, our Social Principles tell us to remember that “All creation is the Lord’s, and we are responsible for the ways in which we use and abuse it.” God wants the church – meaning all of us – to take care of the earth and to make sure we and our fellow humans live in a way that doesn’t hurt the earth or hurt any of God’s creatures living in it.

Let’s watch this video to hear how God created the earth and everything in it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teu7BCZTgDs

You see, God created everything! We talk about how God created us, but we have to remember that God also created rocks and trees, flowers and grass, and everything that swims, walks, runs, or flies. God loves those creatures too. God said that we humans could rule over the fish, birds, and all the other animals, but the very best rulers love and protect those that are in their care. Because of that, we have to work hard to make sure we use resources carefully, that we recycle whatever we can, that we aren’t wasteful or doing things that poison our earth or our water, even if it makes things easier for us humans. We must always remember that God made the world and we are supposed to take care of it. God loves us, and God loves the earth!

Let’s pray together: Loving God, we thank you for the gift of creation. Help us to make good decisions to take care of it. Amen.
